Geomagnetic Storm Outlook for May 21–22

According to Главком: According to the Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) under NOAA, the geomagnetic activity on May 21 and 22 is projected to remain low. Geomagnetic disturbances are measured on a scale from 0 to 9 using the planetary K-index. A reading of 5 or higher signals a strong geomagnetic storm.

On May 21, solar activity is expected to register a K-index of 2.7, placing it in the green zone. This indicates only minor activity that should not cause significant disruptions for the public. For May 22, the forecast shows a K-index of 3.7, also within the green range, pointing to similarly low solar activity. It is important to note that these predictions can shift, as researchers update their data every three hours.

How Geomagnetic Storms Affect Us

Geomagnetic storms are triggered by solar flares and eruptions that release solar energy in the form of charged particles, including protons and electrons. K-index values between 1 and 4 are considered minor, while storms exceeding a K-index of 5 are classified as red-level events. During storms with a K-index of 7 or 8, auroras may become visible. These storms can also influence atmospheric pressure.

Research suggests that during geomagnetic storms, people-especially those with chronic health conditions-should follow certain guidelines to minimize potential risks. These include:

  • maintaining a consistent daily routine and balanced diet;
  • ensuring adequate sleep;
  • eating nutritious foods;
  • avoiding spicy, salty, fatty dishes and alcohol;
  • reducing coffee intake;
  • drinking herbal teas and plenty of water;
  • taking walks outdoors while staying out of direct sunlight;
  • engaging in light physical activity to boost well-being;
  • steering clear of conflicts and stressful situations;
  • resting more and keeping necessary medications close at hand;
  • taking a contrast shower in the morning to invigorate, and a relaxing bath in the evening to relieve tension.

Geomagnetic storm forecasts are particularly valuable for individuals sensitive to changes in Earth’s magnetic field, including those with chronic illnesses. The low solar activity predicted for these two days suggests no serious negative health impacts are likely. Still, staying informed about healthy lifestyle recommendations during geomagnetic storms can help reduce any potential risks.
