Boxing's Biggest Stars Gather in Brownsville

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: The boxer legend Mike Tyson, now 60, turned heads on August 15, 2026, when he arrived at a star-studded boxing parade in the Brownsville neighborhood of New York wearing a traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt. The garment, covered with intricate Ukrainian motifs, made Tyson the center of attention at the event. The publication "Spadok" suggests the outfit was a tribute to Camille Ewald, Tyson's foster mother, who was born in the Ternopil region. Tyson has not publicly explained why he chose to wear the shirt. The embroidered shirt, known as a vyshyvanka, is a deeply symbolic piece of Ukrainian cultural heritage.

Other boxing stars joined the celebration, including Zab Judah and Shannon Briggs. According to a tweet from Top Rank Boxing, Mike Tyson, Zab Judah, and Riddick Bowe were all in attendance. Tyson had lived with Camille Ewald and her husband, trainer Cus D'Amato, since 1980. Ewald, born in 1905 in the village of Staromishchyna, and D'Amato operated a home in the Catskills that served as a training residence for up-and-coming fighters. The Washington Post, in both 1988 and 1993, referred to Ewald as Tyson's foster mother.

Mike Tyson's Legendary Path in the Ring

Long before the parade, Tyson had made his mark on boxing history. On November 22, 1986, at the age of 20 years and 144 days, he knocked out Trevor Berbick in the second round with a technical knockout, becoming the youngest WBC heavyweight champion ever. He later added the WBA and IBF belts to his collection, unifying the titles and solidifying his place as one of the sport's most iconic figures.

Top Rank's tweet also read: "Brownsville legends Mike Tyson, Zab Judah and Riddick Bowe all came out to support @B_Carrington1!" That show of solidarity underscores how meaningful the parade was to the boxing community.

Choosing to wear the vyshyvanka allows Tyson to shine a light on Ukrainian culture while honoring his own family ties. As a global sports icon, he is demonstrating the importance of heritage and identity, potentially inspiring many others to take pride in their roots. The Brownsville parade, meanwhile, highlighted how boxers continue to support each other both inside and outside the ring, adding an extra layer of significance to the day.
