Nearly Half of Ukrainians Shift Careers Amid War, Education Centers Support New Beginnings

Education centers support Ukrainians after the war
Близько половини українців змінюють професійну діяльність через війну, відновлення кар'єри отримує підтримку з освітніх центрів.

How the War is Reshaping Employment in Ukraine

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: The full-scale conflict in Ukraine has dramatically transformed the job market, with almost 48% of the economically active population switching careers. This widespread change stems from the urgent need to adjust to the challenges posed by ongoing military operations. In response, adult education centers, notably supported by DVV International, are offering vital retraining programs to help individuals rebuild their professional lives.

Career changes are most common among manual laborers but also include office workers transitioning into fields such as education, law, economics, and IT. For decades, the Soviet-era mindset of "one education, one lifelong profession" dominated the region, but over the past 10 to 15 years, evolving technology and internet accessibility have made career shifts more accepted and feasible.

The Role of Adult Learning Centers

These centers operate in multiple Ukrainian cities, including:

  • Lviv
  • Vinnytsia
  • Sumy
  • Poltava
  • Zaporizhzhia
  • Mykolaiv
  • Nikopol

DVV International implements adult education programs in over 30 countries worldwide, Ukraine among them. These initiatives provide safe environments for people to explore new career paths, receive support, and create fresh trajectories for professional growth.

A compelling example is Larisa Yermukanova from Nikopol. Before the war, she worked as a station attendant at the Nikopol Ferroalloy Plant. Larisa enrolled in a rehabilitative massage course at the "Kozatsky Nabat" Adult Education Center. Throughout the program, she studied anatomy, massage techniques, safety protocols, and gained extensive hands-on experience. She now plans to make massage therapy her primary occupation.

"Even in a city under bombardment, it’s possible not only to endure the reality but also to grow, support others, and build a professional future." Larisa Yermukanova

The centers offer both short-term and long-term practical skill courses. Their participants include internally displaced persons, former military personnel, and those who have lost their jobs. Adult education has become an essential lifeline for those seeking to transform their lives amidst the war and discover new professional avenues.

This trend highlights the crucial need for societal adaptation to the new economic realities brought on by conflict. Retraining and educational opportunities are key not only to economic recovery but also to fostering hope and resilience. In the context of ongoing warfare, such programs play a vital role in sustaining communities and maintaining social stability.
