According to Велика українська енциклопедія: On May 15, 2023, the world marks the 178th anniversary of the birth of Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov, a distinguished Ukrainian biologist. Born on May 15, 1845, in the village of Ivanivka-now part of Mechnykove in the Dvorichna district of Ukraine's Kharkiv Oblast-Mechnikov became a pioneering figure in embryology, comparative pathology, immunology, and microbiology. His work laid foundations that continue to influence modern medicine and biological sciences.
Throughout his career, Mechnikov earned widespread recognition. He was elected to the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1902, the French Academy of Sciences in 1912, and became an honorary member of the Royal Society of London in 1895. Between 1864 and 1867, he identified a new group of ciliated worms. While training under Professor Rudolf Leuckart, he uncovered the complex life cycle of parasitic roundworms (nematodes). Collaborating with Alexander Kovalevsky, Mechnikov demonstrated the presence of three germ layers in the embryonic development of invertebrates, a crucial insight into evolutionary biology.
