International Nurses Day 2026

According to Главком: On May 12, 2026, the world will observe International Nurses Day, a tribute to Florence Nightingale, who was born on May 12, 1820. Established by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) in 1965, this year's celebration in Ukraine coincides with major reforms to healthcare worker compensation.

Nurse Salary Reforms

In 2026, Ukraine abolished the Unified Tariff System and introduced fixed state guarantees for minimum healthcare worker income. The minimum salary for nurses in Ukraine now stands at 19,250 UAH net (25,000 UAH gross), a sharp rise of nearly 8,850 UAH-or over 80%-compared to last year when nurses earned between 9,500 and 11,000 UAH. By early 2026, the average salary in Ukraine had climbed above 30,000 UAH.

In private clinics, nurses earn between 25,000 and 30,000 UAH. For healthcare workers in areas of potential combat operations, the minimum salary threshold is 30,000 UAH gross. Nurses serving in active combat zones receive at least 27,000 UAH net (40,000 UAH gross). In early 2026, a bill (No. 14357) was registered in the Verkhovna Rada proposing a minimum salary of 40,000 UAH for all medical professionals.

This salary growth is driven by the need to attract and retain skilled personnel in the healthcare sector, especially amid wartime conditions. As the Ukrainian government notes,

“money follows the patient,”

underscoring the importance of financial investment in healthcare.

Notably, nurses make up nearly 60% of the global healthcare workforce, and the WHO projects that by 2030, the world will need an additional 9–10 million nurses. In Ukraine during 2025–2026, nurses on the front lines have started mastering new technologies, including drone-based evacuation of the wounded.

Thus, International Nurses Day 2026 in Ukraine is marked not only by honoring the profession but also by substantial pay reforms that reflect new challenges and needs in the healthcare sector.

The observance of International Nurses Day in Ukraine in 2026 sends a powerful signal to society about the need to support medical workers, particularly during wartime. The changes in compensation and legislative initiatives demonstrate the country’s efforts to address shortages in healthcare personnel. These steps could improve working conditions and attract new specialists to the medical field.

As Ukraine implements significant reforms in healthcare worker compensation, it’s worth noting that neighboring countries are also making strides in this area. For instance, Poland plans to increase doctor salaries starting July 1, 2026, reflecting a broader trend across Europe to improve the financial conditions for healthcare professionals. This shift highlights the ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare systems amid global challenges.
