Meta and Reliance Join Forces for AI Data Center in India

According to НВ — Техно: On Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Meta announced its first-ever data center agreement in India, partnering with Reliance to support artificial intelligence workloads. Under the deal, Meta will lease capacity at a new 168-megawatt facility currently under construction in Jamnagar, expected to be operational within two years.

This collaboration builds on Meta’s existing relationship with Reliance. In 2020, Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, and last year the two companies formed a $100 million joint venture focused on AI solutions. The Reliance data center will run entirely on renewable energy and use desalinated seawater for cooling, with Meta covering all energy and water costs.

India’s Expanding AI Infrastructure

Beyond the data center lease, Meta has secured nearly 1 gigawatt of new renewable energy capacity in India through agreements with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy. Meanwhile, Blackstone-backed AirTrunk plans to invest $30 billion in data centers totaling 5 gigawatts of capacity by 2030.

  • India’s installed data center capacity has surged from roughly 375 megawatts in 2020 to 1.5 gigawatts in 2025.
  • Industry estimates suggest this figure could exceed 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade.

Foreign cloud service providers may qualify for tax exemptions through 2047, reflecting a broader push to attract investment in AI and cloud infrastructure. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, OpenAI, and Uber have also announced major commitments in this space. Indian conglomerates Adani and Tata Consultancy Services have unveiled their own expansion plans as well.

This deal underscores the intensifying competition in India’s AI sector and Meta’s strategic efforts to deepen its footprint in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets.

With substantial investments from global tech giants and rapid infrastructure growth, India is emerging as a critical hub for next-generation technologies, poised to reshape the global AI and cloud services landscape.

The recent collaboration between Meta and Reliance highlights a significant trend in the tech industry, as companies are increasingly investing in expanding data center capabilities to support burgeoning AI demands. This move not only strengthens Meta's position in India but also aligns with the broader shift towards renewable energy solutions in data management, reflecting the ongoing evolution of the digital infrastructure landscape in the region.
