International Fashion Magazine Caused a Scandal with 'Georgian Cover'

It is hard to believe that a women's magazine can provoke diplomatic tension between two countries. But that is exactly what happened with ELLE magazine. The latest cover of the Ukrainian version of the publication created a bombshell effect due to accusations of pro-Russian propaganda. At first glance, it is difficult to understand how this cover is connected to the militants in Donbas and Putin, but if you pay attention to the color of the dress, the situation starts to clarify.

The orange and black dress by Louis Vuitton, worn by actress Michelle Williams on the magazine cover, caused a storm of outrage among many readers and users online.

These colors are indeed identical to the colors of the so-called Georgian ribbon, representing Russian patriotism. Given the strained relations between Ukraine and Russia at present, this photo is not perceived positively, and few Ukrainians are willing to believe that it was a coincidence.

Part of the Internet sees provocation in the photo and believes that the Ukrainian magazine published this photograph on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of victory over Nazism in Russia.

The Order of Saint George, a state award for military merits, became a symbol of Russia's role in World War II in 1945. These ribbons are distributed before the annual military parades on May 9 in honor of the victory over the Nazis and were also a symbol of the infamous 'Anti-Maidan' last year.

Since 2014, the Georgian ribbon has been widely used by pro-Russian militants in Ukraine.

The editorial office of 'Elle Ukraine', in turn, stated that the photoshoot for the magazine cover took place in Britain and was syndicated from there. All 'Georgian' accusations against the publication are considered a misunderstanding and an attempt to find hidden meaning where none exists.

According to the magazine's editorial team, regular readers of ELLE in Ukraine are well aware of the magazine's civic position due to numerous social materials covered previously. They also noted that the May issue includes an article about refugees and displaced persons and volunteer assistance to them.

It should be noted that this is not the first scandal surrounding the Georgian ribbon. Last week, a video in which young Russian girls dance 'twerk' in the costume of 'Georgian bees' caused outrage worldwide due to the openly sexual nature of the dance.
