International Monetary and Financial Committee Session

According to Рубрика — Політика: Anton Siluanov, Russia's Minister of Finance, participated in an International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) meeting for the first time since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. During his speech delivered in Russian, representatives from several countries, including Andriy Pyshnyi, Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine, collectively exited the room. This marked an unprecedented protest at the IMFC, a key advisory body of the International Monetary Fund.

Delegations That Walked Out

The delegations that left the session included members from:

  • Denmark
  • Sweden
  • Finland
  • Norway
  • Lithuania
  • Latvia
  • Estonia

as well as representatives from:

  • The European Union
  • Canada
  • The United Kingdom
  • France
  • Germany

Andriy Pyshnyi commented:

“When Russia’s Finance Minister Siluanov began speaking, I stood up and walked out. I was joined by numerous heads of delegations: all the Nordic countries, the EU, Canada, the UK, France, and Germany.”

He emphasized that this reaction from central bank governors-who are typically very cautious-reflects a clear and unified stance against the ongoing war.

The IMFC meeting, held this year in Bangkok, was the first since 2022 to include a high-level Russian delegation. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in New York, highlighting the crucial role of legislation passed by Ukraine's parliament in securing financial aid. Pyshnyi noted,

“The situation this year is fundamentally different from previous years,”

underlining the importance of macro-financial assistance for Ukraine amid ongoing security challenges and shifts in Russia’s airstrike tactics.

This episode underscores Russia's growing international isolation as a result of its military aggression in Ukraine. The walkout by Western-aligned delegations at the IMFC signals strong solidarity in opposing Russia’s actions. Concurrently, Ukraine’s active engagement in such global forums highlights the critical need for financial support during wartime and the broader effort to maintain regional stability.

The recent developments at the IMFC meeting highlight the increasing tensions surrounding Russia's actions, especially as Ukraine continues to secure substantial international support. In a related context, Ukrainian President Zelensky has successfully negotiated a significant EU loan and expanded sanctions against Russia, further illustrating the global response to the ongoing conflict. This financial backing is crucial for Ukraine as it navigates the challenges posed by the war.
