Minister Meets Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition

According to МЗС: During a visit to Chile, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha held a video call with members of the 31st Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition at the Vernadsky Research Station. The discussion focused on supporting the nation's polar scientists, enhancing international cooperation, and the operations of the research vessel Noosfera. Sybiha emphasized the critical global contributions of Ukrainian researchers, particularly in combating the climate crisis. Ukraine maintains a significant scientific presence in Antarctica despite the ongoing war at home, demonstrating its commitment to global environmental science.

"While in Chile, I was pleased to connect with our 31st Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition team at the Vernadsky Station. I thanked our scientists for their vital work, through which Ukraine makes an essential contribution to global research and the fight against the climate crisis. I assured our Antarctic researchers that Ukrainian diplomacy will always make every effort to support them."

The Vernadsky Station's Role and International Partnerships

The Vernadsky Station serves as a key Ukrainian scientific outpost in Antarctica. Beyond this facility, Ukraine operates the polar supply and research ship Noosfera, which supports not only Ukrainian projects but also international missions, including recent work with a team of Mexican researchers.

A landmark development was the adoption of Ukraine's first comprehensive strategy for the Antarctic, Arctic, and World Ocean, which outlines the nation's priorities in these regions. Furthermore, the Ukrainian Embassy in Chile works closely with the National Antarctic Scientific Center, highlighting the importance of international research collaboration. This strategic focus underscores Ukraine's long-term commitment to polar science as part of the global community.

  • Support for Ukrainian Antarctic researchers
  • International scientific cooperation
  • Advancement of Ukrainian science
  • Global efforts to combat climate change

The new polar strategy demonstrates Ukraine's recognition of the importance of these regions for its own future and for the world. Collaborative ventures, such as shared use of the Noosfera, create fresh opportunities for joint research and knowledge exchange with partner nations.
