Moldova Strengthens Border Safety Amid Rising Drone Threats

Protective zones are being established at key border checkpoints to provide shelter in case of potential strikes. Interior Minister Daniela Misail-Nikitin announced plans to withdraw some border guards from the 'Kriva' and 'Palanka' crossing points back onto Moldovan soil. This decision follows an incident on October 7, 2026, when a Moldovan border officer was injured by a falling projectile near the 'Palanka' checkpoint. The minister confirmed that the officer remains in stable condition and is not facing life-threatening injuries.

Adjustments to Border and Customs Operations

Additionally, Moldova is equipping its border police checkpoints with enhanced protective gear, including those located on Ukrainian territory. On September 12, the Moldovan Customs Service reported withdrawing customs and border personnel from several points, including 'Giurgiulesti-Reni,' 'Briceni-Rososhany,' and 'Kriva-Mamaliga.' For the next 90 days, Moldovan border and customs officials will operate exclusively within Moldova’s existing infrastructure.

“We are also discussing relocating Moldovan personnel to work solely within our territory. Border guards have already been pulled back from two checkpoints, and we intend to do the same at other joint points located on Ukrainian soil. They will continue their duties from Moldovan territory,” stated Daniela Misail-Nikitin.
