Moscow Oil Refinery Shuts Down After Fuel Tank Explosion
Explosion at Moscow Refinery
According to Главком: A fuel tank explosion rocked the Moscow Oil Refinery on June 18. According to monitoring channels, the blast may have been caused by a missile from a Russian Pantsir air defense system, rather than a drone strike. The incident damaged the Euro+ unit, which processed 140,000 barrels of oil per day-47% of the refinery's total capacity. As a result, the Moscow Oil Refinery has completely halted operations.
This explosion came just two days after a June 16 attack that damaged the CDU-6 unit, responsible for 53% of the refinery's oil processing. The Moscow Oil Refinery, which processes over 12 million tons of oil annually, has suffered significant losses from these two strikes.
Security Measures
On the night of June 18, a "Kover" emergency protocol was activated at four major Moscow airports, reflecting heightened security following the recent events. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the situation, stating:
“Tonight, our long-range sanctions once again reached the Moscow region: for the second time this week, the Moscow Oil Refinery was hit. Targets in the Rostov region and temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine were also struck.” - Volodymyr Zelensky
The explosion at the Moscow Oil Refinery has raised concerns about the safety of critical infrastructure in the region. With two attacks occurring in quick succession, protecting strategic industrial sites has become a pressing issue.
These events highlight the growing tension and vulnerability of critical infrastructure in Russia, especially amid ongoing military actions and international sanctions. Given the severity of these strikes, Russian authorities will likely need to implement additional security measures for key facilities, potentially affecting regional energy stability. Critical infrastructure assets are becoming increasingly exposed to external threats, which could have long-term consequences for the country's economy and security.
The recent incidents at the Moscow Oil Refinery are part of a larger trend of escalating attacks on critical energy infrastructure in Russia. Just prior to the refinery explosion, similar drone strikes targeted facilities in the Rostov region, raising alarms about the security of these vital installations.
