The Unbuilt Museum of Ivan Marchuk

According to Главком: In 2021, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a directive to establish a museum and cultural center dedicated to the renowned Ukrainian artist Ivan Marchuk. Despite an active fundraising campaign that continued until Ukraine's 30th Independence Day, the museum has yet to be built. Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Policy, Ivan Verbytsky, has confirmed that the approximately 2.7 million hryvnias (roughly $73,000 USD) raised for the project remains fully intact and has not been spent.

Verbytsky explained that establishing a proper museum for Ivan Marchuk is a major infrastructure undertaking. This requires not only finding a suitable location but also preparing it to meet the challenges posed by the ongoing war and modern standards. Specifically, the project must ensure:

  • specialized conditions for storing and displaying artworks;
  • climate control systems;
  • security;
  • fire safety;
  • comprehensive safety solutions.

Executing such a project demands substantial and stable funding, multi-year planning, and clear security guarantees-a complex challenge amid constant attacks and power outages. Marchuk, a celebrated master of fantastic realism, is considered a national treasure in Ukraine, making the preservation of his legacy a cultural priority.

Future Prospects

This year, a permanent exhibition of Ivan Marchuk's works is planned to open in central Kyiv. However, Lidiia Lisimova, head of the Modern Art Foundation charity, declined to provide information about the fundraising for the museum's creation. She initially promised to release financial statements by December 25, 2025, but later reversed her decision.

Ivan Verbytsky stressed the importance of safeguarding the collected funds, noting they will be held until the country can resume large-scale cultural infrastructure projects after the war ends.

The situation regarding the Ivan Marchuk museum remains unresolved, but the donated money is being preserved untouched for more favorable times. The establishment of this museum is a crucial step for preserving Ukraine's cultural heritage. Despite the difficulties linked to the war and a lack of stable funding, securing the donations offers hope for the project's future realization. The opening of the artist's exhibition in Kyiv this year could mark a first step in reviving the nation's cultural life once the conflict concludes.
