Combating Fraud Schemes in Ukraine

According to МВС: In a recent advisory for the 'Ask the Ministry' project, Ukraine's Ministry of Internal Affairs has detailed a dangerous new scam targeting mobile phone users. The Ministry explained to Channel 24 that criminals can now illegally reissue a person's SIM card without their knowledge, putting their security at serious risk. This type of fraud, known as SIM swapping, is a growing global threat that exploits weaknesses in mobile carrier security.

Once scammers gain control of a phone number, they can access bank accounts, take out loans in the victim's name, and hijack online accounts. This underscores the critical need for vigilance in today's digital communication landscape.

How to Protect Yourself from SIM Swap Fraud

The Ministry also provided guidance on how to recognize signs of a mobile number takeover, secure yourself against this fraud, and what steps to take if you become a victim. The advice covers how criminals use this method to gain access to social media profiles and other sensitive accounts.

As digitalization increases and mobile technology becomes more integral to daily life, the security of phone numbers is more crucial than ever. SIM swap scams can cause significant financial and emotional harm, as victims often lose access to vital personal data. It is essential for citizens to be aware of these risks and follow expert recommendations to safeguard their information.
