Tetiaroa Atoll: A Haven for Marine Life

Between September 2025 and March 2026, a monitoring season recorded 15,614 green turtle hatchlings, along with 113 nesting females and roughly 161 nests. These figures indicate that conservation and species-recovery efforts at this extraordinary site are paying off. Long-term surveys like this are vital for tracking the health of slow-maturing marine species.

The atoll is made up of 12 islands. Brando first came across it in 1960 while scouting locations for the film "Mutiny on the Bounty." He acquired the land in 1966, buying the rights from descendants of Johnston Walter Williams, an American dentist. On the islet of Motu Onetahi, he built a settlement intended for rest and creative inspiration.

Protecting the Ecosystem and Rebuilding Populations

Following the actor's death in 2004, his heirs established the Tetiaroa Society to oversee conservation on the atoll. A team of biologists conducted green turtle population surveys from September 2025 through March 2026. Their work identified 113 egg-laying females, confirming the positive impact of marine species recovery programs.

The Tetiaroa Society has also worked to eradicate invasive species, most notably removing rats that threatened native flora and fauna.
