Boys Break Through River Ice in Chernihiv Region

According to ДСНС: Two minors fell into the freezing water of the Desna River in the Chernihiv region after attempting to cross on unstable ice. A boy born in 2011 sustained a leg fracture and was unable to move, while another, born in 2013, also faced significant distress during the ordeal. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by seemingly frozen bodies of water during winter months.

The parents of the injured child rushed to assist but found themselves unable to safely retrieve the boys from the river. They promptly called for professional help. Specialists from the State Emergency Service (DSNS) were deployed to the scene, where they successfully evacuated both the children and the adults to the riverbank. The boy with the fracture was then handed over to emergency medical personnel for further treatment.

Conclusions and Safety Advice

This event highlights the severe risks associated with walking on frozen lakes and rivers, especially when ice thickness and stability are uncertain. It also underscores how the swift action of parents and the rapid response of rescue services are critical in preventing tragedy. Rescue authorities consistently stress the need for greater public awareness about winter safety near bodies of water.

  • Avoid crossing frozen bodies of water without first verifying the ice is thick and stable;
  • Always remain vigilant and supervise children closely during winter activities near water;
  • In an emergency, immediately contact professional rescue services for assistance.
