Third Lithuanian Volunteer Killed in Action in Ukraine
Death of Ignas Kailius
According to Главком: A 25-year-old Lithuanian volunteer, Ignas Kailius, who fought alongside Ukrainian forces against the Russian Federation, was killed while carrying out a combat mission. Serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces since February 2026, he held the position of assistant grenadier. His final combat operation took place on June 2, with reports of his disappearance emerging in early June. It is known that the area where the soldier was stationed came under fire from Russian troops.
Ignas Kailius was a former footballer. His former club, 'Sūduva,' expressed condolences over the volunteer's death. In a club statement, they said:
“Our dear brother from Lithuania, who served as a volunteer in Ukraine, gave his life on the battlefield. Honor, glory, and gratitude to our brother.”
The statement also emphasized that “we remember and will remember Ignas Kailius as a person who always radiated positive energy.”
Tragic Losses of Lithuanian Volunteers
Ignas Kailius is the third Lithuanian volunteer to die fighting for Ukraine. Two other Lithuanians had previously been killed on the front lines in Ukraine:
- Tadas Tumas, who died in 2024 after a Russian drone struck his vehicle, leaving behind a wife and two children in Lithuania.
- Tomas Valentelis, who died in 2025 while on a combat mission in the Kharkiv region.
Football club 'Sūduva' also called for support for funds aiding Ukraine in its fight against aggression. A tribute to Ignas Kailius will be held during a match on July 6.
The death of Ignas Kailius underscores the critical role of international support for Ukraine amid its armed conflict with Russia. Lithuanian volunteers, like many other foreigners, join Ukraine's armed forces to help defend the country's territorial integrity. This tragedy also highlights the risks volunteers face and reinforces calls to back initiatives that protect the rights and freedoms of Ukrainians.
