Ukraine drone strike shuts down Russia’s largest oil refinery
Strike on the Omsk Oil Refinery
According to Главком: Russia’s biggest oil refinery has been forced to halt operations after a Ukrainian drone attack dealt a serious blow to the country’s fuel processing capacity. The Omsk refinery suffered damage to its CDU-10 crude distillation unit, which accounts for roughly 38% of the facility’s output, after a drone directly struck and ignited the equipment. The adjacent CDU-11 unit, representing 37% of capacity, was also shut down-not from a direct hit, but due to damage to critical engineering systems. Together, the two units form the backbone of the plant’s production.
As the largest gasoline producer in Russia, the Omsk facility processed about 22 million tons of crude oil in 2024, turning out 5 million tons of gasoline and 8 million tons of diesel fuel. With an annual capacity exceeding 21 million tons, the refinery supplies fuel that supports the Russian occupation forces. The attack has sent shockwaves through the local fuel market, with long queues forming at gas stations as residents rushed to stock up on gasoline.
Aftermath of the Attack
In the wake of the drone strike, panic buying swept across Omsk, with drivers lining up for blocks at filling stations. Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed the strike, and new footage emerged online showing drones flying over the refinery complex during the assault. While officials suggest the CDU-11 unit could be restarted in the near term, the overall situation remains tense and uncertain.
This attack on the Omsk refinery underscores the strategic importance of critical infrastructure in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The shutdown of one of Russia’s most vital oil refineries could have far-reaching consequences for the country’s energy security and its broader economy. Until production resumes, fuel markets in the region are expected to stay under strain, potentially driving up prices and limiting supply for consumers.
The recent drone strike on the Omsk facility highlights the ongoing hostilities between Ukraine and Russia, raising questions about the future of energy supplies in the region.
