According to glavcom.ua: In August 2025, there was a significant increase in diplomatic activity from Ukrainian partners, but this did not lead to agreements or truce. US President Donald Trump first held talks with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, and later – with Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders in Washington, reports The New York Times referring to 'Glavkom'.

Despite this, no meeting led to the resolution of key issues such as territorial disputes or security guarantees. A potential meeting between Putin and Zelensky in the near future is considered unlikely, although the Ukrainian leader is prepared for it.

Vladimir Putin insists on Ukraine transferring all of Donbas territory, while Ukraine demands reliable security guarantees against future aggression. NATO membership is seen as the best means of ensuring security for Ukraine, but experts express doubts about its swift realization.

Hostilities continue in Donbas, where Russian troops are trying to occupy new positions. The front line remains virtually unchanged, but the advantage is on the side of the occupiers, and both sides suffer losses.

Proposals for security guarantees

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been tasked with developing proposals for security guarantees for Ukraine after the conflict ends. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed a desire for the UN Security Council to provide guarantees, but insists on Russia's participation in any guarantees, which is unacceptable for Ukraine.

Previously, Donald Trump noted that the final appearance of security guarantees for Ukraine has not yet been determined, but the US will be actively involved in this process. The importance of European security guarantees for Ukraine has been emphasized, as well as the readiness of American reserves to provide assistance.

Return of buried children

One of the urgent issues for Ukraine is the return of about 20,000 children who were abducted and deported to Russia. In 2023, the International Criminal Court lifted the arrest warrant for Putin over war crimes related to these deportations.

Among NATO partners, the possibility of providing Ukraine with two levels of security guarantees is being discussed, combining diplomatic and practical steps to enhance the country's defense capabilities.

After a noted increase in diplomatic activity around Ukraine, no significant agreements or truce have been reached during negotiations between the leaders of the US, Russia, and Ukraine. Hostilities continue in Donbas, and both sides are suffering losses. Indeed, aside from diplomatic efforts, the establishment of a peaceful resolution to the conflict requires complex compromises and flexibility from all sides.
