Restoring Ties Between Ukraine and Hungary

According to Главком: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has stated that the restoration of normal relations between Ukraine and Hungary is only possible after the war concludes. He emphasized that peace is the fundamental key to the bilateral relationship. These remarks come amid persistent and tense disputes between Kyiv and Budapest.

Ongoing Disputes Between the Nations

The disagreements between Ukraine and Hungary are centered on several key issues:

  • Sanctions policy;
  • Rights of national minorities;
  • Hungary's stance on the war.

Prior to these comments, Orban, during a press conference with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, accused Ukraine of interfering in Hungarian elections and financing opponents of his Fidesz party.

Once the war ends, we can return to normal peaceful, diplomatic, economic, and other relations. Therefore, the key to everything, the key to Ukrainian-Hungarian relations, is peace. If there is peace, then Ukrainian-Hungarian relations will be restored. As long as the war continues, I see no chance for improving relations. The reason for this is that we are on the side of peace, while Ukraine wants to drag everyone into the war.

Viktor Orban

These words underscore the complexity of the bilateral relationship and the critical importance of achieving peace for any meaningful dialogue to resume.

The situation highlights how the war in Ukraine is reshaping regional politics and straining ties between neighboring states. Hungary's position, framed as pro-peace, suggests that mending relations will require a comprehensive approach to resolve disputes exacerbated by the conflict. As a NATO and EU member with close ties to Russia, Hungary's stance is a significant factor in European unity regarding Ukraine.
