Humanitarian Operation in Oleshky Comes to a Close

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: On November 1, 2026, Pope Leo XIV acknowledged the successful completion of a humanitarian operation in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, located in the Kherson region. This mission was carried out through a rare collaboration between Ukrainian and Russian authorities, with crucial mediation by former First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump. Due to security risks along the frontline, the evacuation of Oleshky residents was routed through Russian and Belarusian territory. The Ukrainian evacuees crossed back into Ukraine at the Chernihiv border on October 31, 2026, where they were promptly received by medical teams, volunteers, and law enforcement officials.

Mission Background and Key Participants

The agreement to initiate this humanitarian mission was finalized on October 23, 2026. The international mediation was led by Melania Trump and her team, serving as neutral facilitators. Representing Ukraine in the negotiations was Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, while Russia’s human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova represented the Russian side. On October 30, 2026, the Ukrainian delegation arrived in occupied Oleshky to oversee the mission's implementation.

Because of the dangerous conditions along the frontline-including mined zones and restricted areas-the evacuation route passed through Russia and Belarus. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on October 31 that the evacuees had successfully crossed into Ukrainian territory in Chernihiv. On the Ukrainian side, extensive preparations ensured a smooth reception, including:

  • approximately 50 Red Cross ambulances;
  • teams from Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders);
  • a large number of volunteers.

Temporary tents were set up to provide hot meals, tea, and coffee. Ambulances and specially arranged buses were ready to transport evacuees. Law enforcement and rescue personnel were also present to maintain safety and order.

"This humanitarian mission has been conducted to aid the civilian population of Oleshky. I hope the cooperation between the parties, which made this vital act of compassion possible, will encourage further dialogue and lead to concrete steps toward peace," said Pope Leo XIV.

The conclusion of this humanitarian effort marks a significant milestone in rebuilding trust between the conflicting parties and highlights that dialogue remains possible even under challenging circumstances. This initiative sets a precedent for future humanitarian projects in the region, provided both sides continue to engage constructively and seek ways to reduce tensions. Moreover, the well-coordinated evacuation and support for affected civilians underscore the willingness of the international community to actively participate in such critical efforts.

"Let us entrust to Mary, Queen of Peace, and all the saints those suffering from wars across the world," Pope Leo XIV added.

As the humanitarian operation in Oleshky concludes, the focus now shifts to the next steps in ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected residents. Following the successful evacuation, a humanitarian convoy is set to depart, marking a crucial phase in the ongoing efforts to restore stability in the region and assist those who have been impacted by the conflict.
