Check Your Dollars: Which Ones Are Considered Old
In Ukraine, financial institutions may refuse to accept dollar banknotes issued before 1996 due to the complexity of their verification, although all dollars issued after 1914 remain valid, except for those officially removed from circulation. Such restrictions are related to the modernization of dollar bills that began in 1996, when new security features were introduced. This was reported by 24 Kanal.
Do Banks Accept Old Dollar Banknotes?
Financial institutions in Ukraine have the right not to accept old dollar banknotes due to technical difficulties with their verification. Banknotes issued before 1996 lack modern security features, making it difficult to verify their authenticity. In such cases, banks or exchange offices may:
refuse to accept banknotes due to the impossibility of their verification;
require an additional fee for processing such banknotes.

In addition, financial institutions will not accept:
Counterfeit banknotes, which are sent to the National Bank of Ukraine for additional verification, and in the event of confirming the forgery – to law enforcement agencies.
Significantly worn banknotes, which are sent for collection to be replaced.
Since 2023, the NBU has abolished the category of "slightly worn" banknotes to eliminate subjectivity in their assessment. This decision is aimed at unifying the verification process and reducing the impact of human factors.
Regarding the historical context, in the 20th century, the USA had high-denomination banknotes – 500, 1000, 5000, and even 10,000 dollars, but they were gradually withdrawn from circulation. The highest denomination, 100,000 dollars, was used exclusively for internal operations between banks of the Federal Reserve System and was never in cash circulation, notes the National Museum of American History.
