Poland wants to speed up transport at the border with Ukraine after Russian attacks

Poland plans to change the organization of traffic at the border with Ukraine to prevent large accumulations of cars and trucks with fuel. The decision is being discussed after a Russian strike near Yagodyn, which damaged a locomotive, a gas station, and trucks. Previously, Inkorr reported on an attack on Yagodyn-Dorogusk. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced after a meeting at the Government Security Center that customs officers, border guards, police, and the military must jointly organize traffic to prevent dangerous traffic jams near border crossing points.

Warsaw has paid special attention to trucks carrying fuel. Their accumulation at the border in the context of Russian attacks creates additional risks.

«Cooperation between customs officers, police, border guards, and the military should establish traffic flow to prevent traffic jams, as this is becoming dangerous. It is important not to accumulate trucks with fuel near our border crossings,» Tusk stated.

The problem of queues at the Ukrainian-Polish border existed even before the increase in security risks. In the summer, waiting to enter Ukraine reached 12 hours, and hundreds of cars accumulated near individual crossing points.

What happened near the Yagodyn crossing point

Tusk's statement came after a Russian attack on transport infrastructure in Volyn near the Polish border. A drone hit the locomotive of a passenger train from Kyiv to Warsaw. Also, gas stations and trucks were damaged in the Yagodyn area.

Shortly before the strike, a diplomatic train with security advisors from EU countries and former European officials, including Boris Johnson, was at the station. According to sources, people were evacuated about 15 minutes before the hit.

In another train in the area of the station was former CIA director David Petraeus. After the attack, Johnson again called for strengthening Ukraine's air defense and using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine.

Polish authorities are now considering faster transport passage not only as a way to reduce waiting times but also as a security issue. This is especially relevant for trucks carrying fuel and other large accumulations of transport near Ukrainian territory.
