Poland Bans Logging in New Public Forests Created Around Major Cities

Poland's Green Initiative: Public Forests for Climate and Recreation

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Poland has launched a major environmental project to establish public forests around its largest urban centers. The first such forest has already opened near Wrocław, the country’s third-largest city. Authorities plan to create 11 large forest zones that will serve as recreational areas while helping combat climate change.

How the Public Forest Is Organized

Covering 13 hectares, the first public forest is divided into three functional zones:

• Natural forests
• Semi-natural forests
• Social forests

The social forest zone alone spans over 8,000 hectares. Across the entire public forest area, strict logging restrictions will be enforced, meaning no timber harvesting is planned. This initiative is part of the environmental policy of Poland’s government, which took office in December 2023.

In the near future, public forests are expected to appear near ten Polish cities, including:

• Warsaw
• Kraków
• Poznań
• Łódź
• Kielce
• Bielsko-Biała

Paulina Hennig-Kloska called this a historic moment and the start of a new approach to forest protection, highlighting the initiative’s importance for Poland’s environmental future.

This public forest initiative reflects Poland’s growing focus on environmental issues and the need to preserve natural resources.
