Hungarian PM Comments on the Unrest Sweeping France

According to Укрінформ — Мігранти: Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Márki-Zay took to social media platform X to address the recent widespread disturbances in France, which have resulted in extensive damage to historic landmarks, injuries to law enforcement, and enormous financial losses. He emphasized Hungary’s commitment to strict migration controls and border security in response to such turmoil.

France Faces Large-Scale Protests

On October 17, France experienced massive demonstrations sparked by rising living costs, increased fuel prices, and challenges within the education system and public services. The French Ministry of the Interior estimated around 550,000 participants, while organizers claimed up to 800,000. Although most protesters remained peaceful, violent outbreaks, including arson and looting, occurred in several cities.

Authorities detained approximately 1,800 individuals following the unrest, with property damage estimated in the hundreds of millions of euros. Expressing solidarity with the French people, Péter Márki-Zay stated:

“Amid senseless destruction and unjustified violence, it’s clear why Hungary insists on a firm stance regarding migration and refuses to relax border controls or immigration policies under any pressure.”

He further added, “We hope it’s not too late. Let there be no confusion: peaceful and lawful protest is a fundamental right, while vandalism and violence constitute serious crimes. The Europe we cherish now faces a grave threat.”

This turmoil in France highlights deep-rooted socio-economic struggles shared by many European nations. The Hungarian Prime Minister’s comments on migration signal a regional trend where governments aim to reinforce security measures and border management amid internal unrest. This development is likely to intensify political and social debates around immigration and state responsibility in maintaining order during widespread protests.

For international observers, these events underline the complex balancing act European countries face between upholding democratic freedoms and ensuring public safety in times of social crisis.

The ongoing unrest in France has raised significant concerns about the broader implications of migration policies in Europe. As noted by various leaders, including former President Trump, the connection between the protests and the migration crisis cannot be overlooked. This situation underscores the need for a comprehensive discussion on how European nations can address both social unrest and migration challenges effectively.
