Romanian President Picks MEP as New Prime Minister
Romania Gets a New Prime Minister
According to Главком: Nearly a month after the resignation of former Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, Romanian President Nicușor Dan has appointed Eugen Tomac, a Member of the European Parliament, as the country's new premier. Under Romanian law, Tomac now has ten days to put together a new government.
The Political Landscape
A member of the Renew Europe political group in the European Parliament, Eugen Tomac also serves as an advisor to the president. Notably, he is not affiliated with any parliamentary party-a quality President Dan believes will help build consensus across the political spectrum.
“I chose someone independent from the parties, yet with the necessary experience to negotiate with them, because this requires consensus and political know-how.” - Nicușor Dan
Following Bolojan's resignation, Romania's political factions spent several weeks in talks over forming a new government. Tensions within the ruling coalition escalated during this period, according to President Dan.
“I am tasking Eugen Tomac with forming a government as prime minister. This is a pivotal moment.” - Nicușor Dan
Tomac was born near Izmail in Ukraine's Odesa region and moved to Romania at a young age. In the coming days, he is expected to unveil a technocratic cabinet composed of specialists.
This appointment could prove a turning point for Romanian politics, particularly given the urgent need for stability and cross-party cooperation. Tomac's independence from parliamentary parties, combined with his international experience, may help ease tensions that have built up from earlier political crises. Observers will be watching closely to see how the new government shapes the country's political direction.
