Political Turmoil in Serbia

According to Главком: Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has signaled he may step down after a major protest in Slavija. He made this announcement in Beijing at the start of his visit to China. Vucic stressed that he does not intend to cut his term short like his predecessor Boris Tadic did. The protest in Slavija drew tens of thousands of demonstrators demanding the president's resignation and early elections, escalating into a nationwide movement.

Belgrade police used tear gas and flash-bang grenades to disperse the crowd, and also shielded masked attackers who targeted protesters. The demonstrators' demands include:

  • holding early parliamentary elections;
  • upholding the rule of law;
  • accountability for assaults on protesters and journalists.

A UN special rapporteur on human rights noted that conditions in the country have worsened since April 2025. These developments highlight deepening public frustration with the government's actions.

Vucic stated: 'So it is quite possible that I will resign soon.'

He added: 'Either you resign, or you stay president until the end of your term.' These events reflect growing tensions within Serbian society and its political landscape.

Vucic's potential resignation could significantly impact political stability in Serbia, as the protests reveal widespread discontent with the authorities. The crisis may trigger shifts in the political scene, potentially leading to new elections and opening doors for other political forces. Time will tell if Vucic can maintain his position amid such intense pressure.

The escalating unrest in Serbia has not only prompted President Vucic to consider resignation but has also led to a significant police response. Reports indicate that Belgrade police resorted to tear gas and stun grenades to manage the protests, raising concerns about the government's handling of dissent. This violent crackdown further underscores the tensions within the country, as citizens demand accountability and change.
