A $100 Million Private Island Near Rio Hits the Market
Pitangui Island: A Private Paradise for Sale
According to УНІАН — Туризм: Located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, the private island of Pitangui spans over 30 hectares and is now listed for $100 million (£75 million). The island once belonged to renowned plastic surgeon Ivo Pitangui, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 93. It became a hotspot for celebrities, hosting notable figures such as Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Frank Sinatra, and Jimmy Carter.
Features and Potential of the Island
The property boasts six modernist-style bungalows, nine luxury suites, a swimming pool, and a private 400-meter airstrip. It also includes a helipad, a marina, a private forest with hiking trails, and three secluded beaches. Natural resources on the island include freshwater springs and a natural aquarium. A tennis court is also available for use.
The bungalows' architecture draws partial inspiration from the lair of villain Francisco Scaramanga in the 1974 James Bond film 'The Man with the Golden Gun.' A new owner could potentially construct a mansion of approximately 2,790 square meters, pending the necessary permits. Estimates suggest this addition could increase the island's value by an extra $135 million (£100 million).
Gary Hersham, founder of Beauchamp Estates, described the island as 'a unique trophy asset' that 'also unlocks extraordinary potential.'
The sale of Pitangui Island highlights growing interest in private tropical territories, particularly among wealthy investors seeking exclusive retreats or investment opportunities. Potential buyers may consider various uses for the island, which could significantly impact the local real estate market, given its celebrity pedigree and potential for tourism development.
Hersham further noted that the island 'could remain an exceptional private sanctuary for a discerning multimillionaire or billionaire, or be transformed, subject to approval, into an ultra-exclusive hotel resort in the style of Neckar Island, featuring world-class five-star amenities.'
