Putin's Uranium Proposal to Trump

According to ХВИЛЯ: During a phone call, Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested to then-U.S. President Donald Trump that Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium be transported to Russia for safekeeping. Trump declined the offer. This diplomatic exchange highlights the ongoing international concern over Iran's nuclear capabilities. Iran is known to possess 450 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%, a quantity sufficient to create more than ten nuclear bombs within weeks. Russia has prior experience in storing Iranian low-enriched uranium under the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal.

Alternative Plans for Uranium Control

The United States and Israel are considering other options for securing Iran's highly enriched uranium. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that Washington has various contingency plans to establish control over this material. Meanwhile, in an interview with Fox News Radio, Donald Trump stated that seizing the uranium is not currently a top priority for him.

'I think Putin may be helping them a little bit, yes. And he probably thinks we're helping Ukraine, right? So he says that, and China would say the same thing. It's like - hey, they're doing it, and we're doing it, to be honest.' - Donald Trump

A U.S. official emphasized that this was not the first such proposal to be rejected and that the American position is that 'we need to see the uranium secured.'

The situation surrounding Iran's enriched uranium remains tense, as its stockpile represents a significant potential impact on global security. Trump's refusal to accept the proposal for Russia to take custody of the material underscores a U.S. reluctance to entrust this responsibility to another nation, particularly given the complex geopolitical rivalries at play. The episode also illustrates the intricate web of international relations, where conflicts like the war in Ukraine influence dealings on other issues, as Russia and Iran share aligned interests.
