UPL revives youth championship U21: what it means for clubs

UPL players celebrate championship of the national championship
Молодіжний чемпіонат U21 отримує новий імпульс: як це вплине на команди

According to glavcom.ua: Ukrainian football is preparing for the revival of the national U21 championship starting next year. According to a recent decision by the Ukrainian Football Association, starting from the 2026/2027 season, having a U21 team within the structure of each UPL club will become a mandatory licensing condition. This initiative aims to create a bridge between children's and adult sports, as after the abolition of a similar tournament in 2021, a significant number of academy graduates lost playing practice or were forced to prematurely end their careers.

Although the compulsory status of the innovation will take effect in a year and a half, the actual return of the championship to the competition calendar is planned for the next season. The regulations of the updated championship provide a certain level of flexibility: up to five players over the age of 21 may be included in the match squad. This will allow main squad players to recover their form faster after injuries, and the youth to gain experience from their older colleagues directly on the field.

The history of youth competitions in Ukraine lasted 17 years, and the last winner of the tournament before its cancellation was Kyiv's 'Dynamo'. After the reform in 2021, clubs were encouraged to integrate their youth teams into the First and Second leagues; however, due to financial and organizational difficulties, only a few took advantage of this right. Most simply disbanded their youth teams, which negatively affected the staffing potential of national football.

The revival of the tournament has found wide support among the football community, including the initiative was endorsed by the head coach of the Ukrainian national team, Serhiy Rebrov. In addition to the creation of U21 teams, the strategy involves the gradual inclusion of youth teams (from U10 to U17) directly into the club vertical to ensure a full cycle of training for future stars.

Ukrainian football is preparing for an important step in the development of the country's football infrastructure. The revival of the national U21 championship is expected to foster the development of young talents and provide them with playing practice at a higher level. We wish success in implementing this initiative and hope for positive changes in Ukrainian football.
