A Groundbreaking Achievement in Robotics

According to НВ — Техно: On September 25, 2024, in Sanchu, the robotic world witnessed a remarkable milestone as the quadruped robot RAIBO2 completed a full marathon of 42.195 kilometers in 4 hours, 19 minutes, and 52 seconds without any battery recharge. This accomplishment shatters previous endurance records for four-legged robots running on a single charge. RAIBO2 is the first of its kind to cover such a long distance continuously without needing a battery swap during the run.

RAIBO2 maintained an average speed of approximately 2.64 meters per second throughout the marathon. Developed by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), this robot represents a significant leap forward compared to earlier models. Just a few weeks earlier, in September 2024, a prior attempt by a similar robot had stopped at 37 kilometers, while RAIBO2 more than tripled the operational range. Previously, four-legged robots could only manage about 20 kilometers on a single battery.

Enhancements in Energy Efficiency

The impressive endurance of RAIBO2 stems from advanced energy-saving improvements in its mechanical design and control systems. It features lighter legs and refined electronics for motor management, which reduce unnecessary joint movements and minimize paw-ground impact. These optimizations significantly boost locomotion efficiency. RAIBO2's cost of transport (COT) is 0.25, outperforming the human COT of 0.37, indicating superior energy economy.

Thanks to its innovative design, RAIBO2 is well-suited for a variety of demanding tasks, including:

  • search and rescue missions
  • industrial inspections
  • outdoor operations

Moreover, RAIBO2 can navigate stairs, rough terrain, and uneven environments where wheeled robots typically struggle. This breakthrough opens up promising new applications for robotics, showcasing considerable progress in autonomous mobility and durability.

RAIBO2's success in running a marathon without recharging highlights new frontiers in robotics, particularly for use cases demanding high autonomy and endurance.

This advancement could transform how robots are deployed in challenging situations like rescue operations, which require extended, uninterrupted performance. Increasing energy efficiency in robots like RAIBO2 may accelerate their adoption across industries and enhance their integration into everyday life.

As robotics continue to evolve, the advancements showcased by RAIBO2 highlight the potential for more versatile machines. For instance, a recent innovation in the field features a compact robot that has successfully mastered jumping, climbing, and swimming, demonstrating the expanding capabilities of robotic technology.
