Russian Strikes Target Ukrainian Railways, Disrupting Train Service in Three Regions

Russia attacks Ukrzaliznytsia: changes in train traffic
Військові удари Росії пошкоджують залізничні сполучення та призводять до перебоїв руху поїздів у трьох областях України.

Railway Infrastructure Under Attack

According to Главком: On February 2, Russian forces launched an attack on infrastructure belonging to Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's state railway operator. This has caused significant disruptions to train schedules in three regions: Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Sumy. Ukrzaliznytsia confirmed the situation, emphasizing the critical role rail transport plays in moving both passengers and vital humanitarian supplies, which are essential for the nation's economy. These attacks are part of a wider pattern of targeting Ukraine's logistical backbone.

In the Zaporizhzhia region, the Russian military directed a drone strike at a locomotive stationed at a rail yard. Fortunately, the train crew was sheltering at the time of the impact, and no casualties were reported. Ukrzaliznytsia stressed that the enemy is deliberately striking railway assets, fully aware of their crucial importance for maintaining transportation links across the country.

Impact Across Other Regions

Simultaneously, during the night of February 1-2, Russian forces carried out a mass attack on the Cherkasy region, which resulted in civilian casualties. Despite shelling in the Sumy region town of Konotop, train traffic there continues to operate. Ukrzaliznytsia advises passengers traveling to Synelnykove and Zaporizhzhia to follow instructions from train staff and station personnel in Dnipro. The company also noted that the Lozova-Barvinkove-Kramatorsk line remains a high-risk zone, recommending passengers use alternative bus services for that route.

Ukrzaliznytsia assures the public that if security conditions permit, it will attempt to run trains as it has done previously, though the safety of passengers and railway workers remains the top priority.

The ongoing shelling of Ukraine's railway facilities highlights the growing threat to infrastructure that is critically important for the functioning of the economy and the transportation of humanitarian supplies.

Ukrzaliznytsia

Ukrzaliznytsia continues to implement measures to ensure passenger safety. However, recent events underscore the need for constant vigilance and adaptation to rapidly changing conditions. Attacks on rail networks directly impact civilian mobility and supply chains, making it imperative for travelers to stay informed of the latest updates and official guidance.
