Series of Attacks in 2025
This incident is part of a broader Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian infrastructure in February and March 2025. Notably, on the night of March 20, Russian forces struck Naftogaz facilities in the Poltava and Sumy regions, causing significant damage. Earlier, on March 11, Naftogaz's oil transport infrastructure in southern Ukraine was also shelled.
Attacks on Naftogaz assets have been frequent, with other major strikes occurring on:
- February 20
- February 9
- The night of February 7-8
when Russian forces carried out drone attacks on facilities in the Poltava region. In total, 229 attacks on Naftogaz facilities have been recorded in 2025. These events highlight an intensifying Russian strategy to cripple Ukraine's critical infrastructure, a tactic that has escalated since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
Protecting this infrastructure remains a vital challenge for Ukraine, as attacks on energy assets can have severe humanitarian and economic consequences. The persistent bombardment underscores the ongoing escalation of the conflict, necessitating enhanced security measures and continued international support to safeguard these key facilities.
This latest strike in the Poltava region is part of a larger pattern of Russian assaults on Ukrainian infrastructure.
