Ukraine Hit by Major Russian Assault Involving Over 370 Drones and Missiles
Ukraine Endures Major Russian Barrage
According to ДСНС: In a large-scale overnight assault, Russian forces launched more than 370 drones and 21 missiles against multiple Ukrainian regions, including Kyiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv. The attack on the city of Kharkiv caused significant damage to a maternity hospital, a dormitory for displaced persons, a medical college, and residential buildings. Preliminary reports indicate one person was killed and dozens were injured, including a child. In the capital region, the primary target was energy infrastructure, a recurring strategic focus for Russian forces.
Widespread Damage and Response
The nighttime barrage, which combined various types of attack drones with cruise and ballistic missiles, inflicted the most severe damage in Kharkiv. The strikes on critical civilian facilities, such as the maternity ward and housing for displaced people, have caused deep alarm among the city's residents. This attack is part of a sustained Russian campaign targeting Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, now in its third year.
Dozens of people, including a child, are confirmed wounded. Emergency services, including rescue workers, medical personnel, and utility crews, are currently working at the impact sites to manage the aftermath. The targeting of energy facilities in the Kyiv region underscores the ongoing Russian objective to cripple Ukraine's power grid and weaken civilian resilience.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the situation, stating, "Every Russian strike on our energy sector proves the urgent need for air defense systems."
Zelenskyy stressed that there can be no delay in responding to these attacks and that a forceful answer is required. He also emphasized the critical importance of implementing air defense agreements reached with former U.S. President Donald Trump during their meeting in Davos.
This latest assault serves as another stark reminder of the persistent threat facing Ukraine and highlights the pressing need for a reliable and comprehensive air defense network. The scale of the damage and the number of casualties underscore how international support for strengthening Ukraine's air defenses remains crucial for civilian safety and regional stability.
