Russia prepares for January offensive: key targets in the Kharkiv and Donetsk directions
Activation of Russian troops in 2024
According to Главком: Russian troops plan to activate in January 2024 in the directions of the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions. The head of the communication department of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Viktor Trehubov, reported preparations for a new offensive, emphasizing that Russian forces have specific goals. In particular, they are trying to bypass Vovchansk and eliminate the Ukrainian foothold east of Kupyansk.
Viktor Trehubov noted that this indicates the intentions of the Russian army to resume active operations in the coming days. Considering the situation at the front, he also pointed out the possibility of the enemy crossing rivers when they freeze, as this provides Russian troops the opportunity to act without using watercraft.
Loss of territories and tension at the front
It should be reminded that in December 2025, soldiers of the 57th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade of the 16th Army Corps destroyed a Russian sabotage group in Vovchansk. It is also worth noting that in 2025, Russian occupation forces seized control of about 4.7 thousand square kilometers of Ukrainian territory. At the same time, in 2024, Ukraine has already lost control of more than 3.6 thousand square kilometers of territory.
Thus, the situation at the front remains tense, and further actions by Russian troops may significantly affect the development of the conflict.
The increase in the activity of Russian troops in eastern Ukraine indicates an escalation of the conflict in the region. This development may lead to new losses of territory and human resources on both sides. The situation requires careful monitoring, as changes at the front can significantly impact the political and military situation in Ukraine and beyond.
