Artificial Intelligence as a Propaganda Tool

According to Главком: According to Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD), Russia is now actively employing artificial intelligence to fabricate deceptive videos. These clips feature men posing as Ukrainian military personnel who complain about a lack of essential supplies. The CCD states that these materials are designed to spread Russian propaganda and destabilize the situation within Ukraine. This tactic represents a significant escalation in digital disinformation campaigns, leveraging new technology to sow confusion.

The CCD has also highlighted a major concern: under the strain of wartime tension, the hyper-realistic quality of these AI-generated videos makes them difficult to quickly identify as fakes. This can lead to the rapid spread of false information among the public. Notably, Russian propagandists are using this technology to exploit sensitive topics like power outages, thereby adding further strain to an already difficult situation.

The Consequences of Disinformation

Separate disinformation incidents have also been recorded in Ukraine, including the circulation of false schedules for gas supply restrictions in the Khmelnytskyi region and the distribution of phishing emails. Ukraine's Ministry of Energy has stressed the critical need for public caution when consuming information, as such falsehoods can have serious societal consequences. In a related propaganda effort, Russian sources are also spreading unfounded claims of having 'full control' over the city of Kupiansk, underscoring the breadth of these coordinated campaigns.

The disinformation landscape in Ukraine remains critically important amid the ongoing war. The use of AI to create convincing fake materials not only complicates efforts to counter propaganda but also poses a direct threat to public information security. In response to these challenges, it is vital for citizens to maintain a critical mindset toward the news and information they receive, especially within the context of a relentless information war.
