Russia's New Ultimatum on Donbas

According to Главком: Talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, which began on February 4th, are continuing in Abu Dhabi. On the second day of negotiations, February 5th, the Russian state news agency TASS disseminated a new ultimatum from the Kremlin. Russia's position is that a peace agreement must include international recognition of Donbas as Russian territory. This demand directly challenges Ukraine's sovereignty and is a core issue in the ongoing conflict.

State of the Negotiations

The negotiation process involves trilateral consultations and working groups. The Ukrainian side maintains that its position regarding its territories is unchanged.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized: 'My position on our territories is unchanged.'

A representative of the Ukrainian delegation, Rustem Umerov, noted that the talks are proceeding in the same formats as the previous day, adding:

'We are working in the same formats as yesterday: trilateral consultations, work in groups, and further synchronization of positions. The results will follow later.'

The atmosphere at the talks remains tense, with the positions of the sides still unaligned.

These negotiations are taking place against a backdrop of escalating conflict in the region and enduring political tension between Ukraine and Russia. The recognition of Donbas as part of Russia is a highly sensitive issue for Ukraine, underscoring the critical importance of further talks for achieving regional stability. A successful outcome could mark a significant step toward a peaceful resolution, while a lack of progress would only deepen the crisis.
