Phosphorus Munitions Strike Kostiantynivka

According to Главком: In a violation of international law, the Russian military launched phosphorus munitions against the city of Kostiantynivka in Donetsk region. The attack targeted a frontline area, and aerial reconnaissance operators from the "Khizhak" brigade documented what they described as a war crime. This report was shared by Glavcom, citing information from the Patrol Police Department.

Footage captured by a drone operator with the call sign Avrora shows dozens of burning phosphorus fragments descending on residential neighborhoods of Kostiantynivka. White phosphorus ignites spontaneously upon contact with oxygen, burning at temperatures between 800 and 1,300 °C. These fiery particles can burn through metal roofs and reinforced concrete, sparking instant fires that are extremely difficult to extinguish using conventional methods.

Consequences of Using Phosphorus Munitions

Additionally, phosphorus poses a deadly threat to human life. Contact with skin causes deep chemical and thermal burns that can reach the bone. Inhaling the white smoke produced during combustion leads to severe poisoning, respiratory damage, and fatal tissue necrosis.

Analysts from the DeepState project have also noted an expansion of the occupiers' advance zone south of Illinivka, along with active infiltration near Stupochky and Predtechne. This puts the northern part of Kostiantynivka at risk. In late April, analysts warned of potential breakthroughs to the city, identifying the southeastern outskirts as the most dangerous area. Commander Syrsky acknowledged challenges with unit rotation, which could affect the situation in the region.

As a result, the situation in Kostiantynivka remains critical, and the use of phosphorus munitions underscores the severity of war crimes occurring in Ukraine. Employing such weapons not only breaches international norms but also poses a significant threat to civilians already suffering from the prolonged conflict. It is crucial to monitor further developments in the region, as an escalation in military activity could lead to more civilian casualties and worsen the humanitarian crisis.

The recent attack highlights a troubling trend, as Russian forces are reportedly expanding their influence in the vicinity of Illinivka, further jeopardizing the safety of Kostiantynivka. This escalation raises concerns about the potential for increased military activity in the region.
