Vegetable Oil Spill From Port Attack Threatens Black Sea, Pollution Drifts Toward Odesa

Black Sea Contamination After Airstrike

According to Главком: On April 26, an aerial assault on the ports of Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi triggered a vegetable oil spill that is now polluting the Black Sea. The contaminated zone continues to expand, moving closer to the Odesa coastline. Authorities are actively working to contain and mitigate the damage.

The Black Sea waters near Chornomorsk port were contaminated with oil products after an airstrike destroyed a storage tank containing vegetable oil. Over the past day, the area affected by the spill has grown. Yellow, oily slicks now stretch 700 meters along the shoreline, with some patches extending 1 to 15 meters into the sea. During a visual inspection, the State Environmental Inspectorate of the South-Western District confirmed the presence of these greasy films on the water's surface.

Aftermath of the Attack on Pivdennyi Port

In the attack on Pivdennyi port, containers holding flour and vegetable oil caught fire. Combustion byproducts and the oil itself then leaked into the Black Sea. As a result, the port channel has been sealed off with two layers of boom barriers, and the port's waters are temporarily closed until cleanup is complete. Specialized vessels and pollution-collection ships have been deployed for the response.

Meanwhile, in Odesa near the Delphin and Lanzheron beaches, slicks and dead birds have been discovered. During an inspection, the first victim was recorded: a bird whose feathers were completely coated in an oily substance. The animal was rescued and handed over to experts for cleaning and rehabilitation.

State inspectors surveyed the Black Sea waters and coastline within the city limits of Chornomorsk, prompted by reports of pollution from the destroyed oil tank. They noted that the oil film forms an impermeable barrier on the water's surface, blocking gas exchange and potentially killing small marine organisms. The situation remains under control, and cleanup operations are ongoing.

This incident highlights the severe environmental risks posed by military conflicts, which can cause significant harm to marine ecosystems.

The vegetable oil spill in the Black Sea not only endangers marine life but could also impact the region's economy, particularly fishing and tourism. Mitigating the damage will require coordinated efforts from government agencies and the involvement of specialists to assess the long-term ecological consequences.

The recent airstrike on the Chornomorsk port not only caused a significant oil spill but also resulted in the destruction of a storage tank containing a substantial amount of sunflower oil. This incident has raised concerns about the environmental impact and the ongoing pollution crisis in the Black Sea.
