Russia has begun striking targets in Syria, according to sources citing officials from the Russian Ministry of Defense.

The attacks are coordinated from a new information center in Baghdad, which brings together military personnel from Russia, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. Russia claims that they are in contact with American officials in Baghdad and are providing Americans with information about the airstrikes.

Russia officially announced on September 30 that it would deploy troops to support the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. The Federation Council, the upper chamber of the Russian parliament, unanimously approved President Vladimir Putin's request to deploy forces abroad.

It is noteworthy that Assad personally requested military assistance from Russia. Russia accepted the request and stated that the Russian Air Force would be used in Syria.

Russian planes have already begun bombing targets in the city of Homs, in an area controlled by rebel groups, according to numerous reports, photographs, and videos on social media.

As a result of the airstrikes in Homs province, 27 people, including six children, have died, according to international news agencies citing the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Russian officials demanded that American military aircraft immediately leave Syrian airspace, Fox News reported, citing an unnamed senior American official.

Russia's shift of focus to Syria coincided with relative calm in Ukraine's Donbas. Analysts believe that Putin aims to create a frozen conflict there.

It should be noted that the decision to send Russian troops to Syria followed Putin's proposal at the UN General Assembly on September 28 to create a coalition against the rebel group Islamic State, which is fighting against Assad.
