Sara Mullally, Bishop of London, has been appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. This is the first historical appointment of a woman to such a high position in the Anglican Church. Mullally's confirmation in the position will take place after a ceremonial event in January.
Prior to her religious career, Sara Mullally was a nurse. She served as Chief Nursing Officer for England and in 2005 was awarded the title of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her contribution to the development of the medical field. Since 2015, she has been serving as a bishop in Crediton, and in 2018 became the 133rd Bishop of London.
