Sergio Ramos Shares Story of Young Ukrainian Footballer, Highlighting UNICEF's Role
How Taras Kravchuk Met Sergio Ramos
According to Главком: Thirteen-year-old aspiring footballer Taras Kravchuk from Kyiv had a virtual meeting with Spanish star Sergio Ramos through a UNICEF initiative. Ramos, the former captain of Real Madrid, shared Kravchuk's story on his Instagram, emphasizing how sports can build resilience and hope. This encounter was a significant moment for the young athlete, whose life in the Ukrainian capital is marked by the challenges of war.
The Legacy of FC Lokomotyv Kyiv
Kravchuk is a product of FC Lokomotyv Kyiv, a club founded in 1919. Lokomotyv made its professional debut in the 2023/24 season, competing in Ukraine's Second League and reaching the quarter-finals of the Ukrainian Cup that same year, a major milestone for the historic team.
Sergio Ramos, who became a UNICEF ambassador in Spain in 2014, is a football legend with immense influence. Born in a suburb of Seville, he made his senior debut in the 2003/04 season. His illustrious 16-season career at Real Madrid, for which he was transferred for €27 million, included major trophies:
- Five Spanish league titles
- Two Copa del Rey victories
- Four UEFA Champions League trophies
- Other prestigious honors
After leaving Madrid, he played for Paris Saint-Germain for two years, winning two Ligue 1 titles and a French Super Cup.
With the Spanish national team, Ramos won two European Championships and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In his post about Taras Kravchuk, he wrote:
“He lives in Kyiv and dreams of becoming a professional footballer. But his reality is one of air raid sirens, shelters, and fear. Yet he keeps moving forward. His story shows that sport is more than a game. It builds resilience, hope, and a sense of belonging.” - Sergio Ramos
This UNICEF effort highlights the critical need to support young athletes facing adversity, like many children in Ukraine today. Sports can serve not only as a path to personal achievement but also as a vital tool for fostering social resilience during difficult times. The involvement of global stars like Ramos underscores a powerful sense of solidarity and responsibility within the world of sport.
