Ukraine's Foreign Minister Urges EU to Ban Russian Aggressors from Entry
Call for an Entry Ban on Russian Citizens
According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called on European Union member states to implement a comprehensive entry ban for citizens of the Russian Federation who have participated in the armed aggression against Ukraine. In a statement published on the social network X, Sybiha stressed the importance of this measure for strengthening security in Europe. This appeal comes as Ukraine seeks to increase the diplomatic and economic costs for Russia's military actions.
The head of Ukrainian diplomacy cited Estonia as an example, which has already implemented corresponding mechanisms at the national level. Sybiha stated that
“the time has come to impose a full entry ban to the EU for Russian citizens who participated in Russian aggression against Ukraine.”
He believes this decision would set
“the right price for the wrong choice,”
because “every Russian who signs a contract to invade Ukraine will know that he is also signing a lifetime ban on entry to Europe.”
Emphasis on the Step's Importance
The minister urged his EU colleagues to “take this step seriously” and emphasized that “now is the time to extend this to the entire European Union.”
Andrii Sybiha's call for an entry ban on Russian citizens involved in military actions against Ukraine reflects the escalating tension between Ukraine and Russia, as well as Ukraine's drive to intensify international support. Such measures could become part of a broader European Union strategy to tighten sanctions against Russia and ensure regional security. The debate over travel bans for Russian nationals has been a point of contention within the EU since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
Implementing such restrictions could significantly impact relations between EU countries and Russia, as well as influence European public opinion regarding the war in Ukraine.
