Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant Ceases Electricity Generation

According to Главком: Due to a deteriorating security situation, the Sloviansk Thermal Power Plant in Mykolaivka, Donetsk Oblast, has stopped producing electricity. This facility was the final major power station in the Donbas region still under Ukrainian control and operational. The decision to halt operations was made on March 30, 2026, to safeguard the lives of personnel as combat operations drew closer to the site.

Having operated for over 70 years, the Sloviansk plant was a key electricity provider for eastern Ukraine. It had continued functioning despite persistent shelling and damage to its infrastructure, including its smokestacks. However, given the escalating threat, the management of PJSC Donbasenergo decided a full shutdown was necessary. A skeleton crew will remain on-site to maintain the transit of electricity through the grid and to ensure the continued supply of drinking water to the city.

"A portion of the personnel will continue working at the station to ensure the transit of electricity and the supply of drinking water for the city. The cooling pond will also remain in operation for economic activities," stated a company announcement.

Military Situation and Challenges for the Energy Sector

This shutdown occurs against the backdrop of an active Russian offensive, which entered an intensified phase of its spring-summer campaign in 2026. The main thrust of the offensive is focused on breaking through Ukraine's fortified defensive lines in Donetsk Oblast.

"A sad moment, but this has already entered the history of Sloviansk Donbasenergo... I wish everyone moral fortitude during this transitional period," commented the company's leadership.

The cessation of operations at the Sloviansk TPP symbolizes the severe challenges facing Ukraine's energy infrastructure amid the ongoing war. This decision underscores not only the threat to critical energy assets but also the paramount importance of worker safety in a combat zone. The continued presence of a maintenance crew highlights efforts to preserve vital functions like water and power supply for civilians. The loss of this generating capacity is a significant blow to regional energy stability and will impact local communities. These developments illustrate the immense strain the conflict places on Ukraine's critical civilian infrastructure.
