Sony’s PlayStation 5 Sales Reach 2.6 Million in Q2 2026, Total Units Near 98 Million
PlayStation 5 Sales Performance in Q2 of Fiscal Year 2026
According to НВ — Техно: Despite a decline in demand, Sony maintains solid sales figures for its PlayStation 5 console. In the second quarter of the 2026 fiscal year, the company sold 2.6 million PS5 units, bringing the total number of consoles sold worldwide to 97.9 million. However, this marks a decrease of 1.4 million units compared to the same quarter last year, when Sony moved 4 million consoles.
While hardware sales have slowed, there has been notable growth in software sales for both PS5 and PS4. Gamers purchased 88.2 million game copies during the quarter, an increase of 7.9 million compared to the previous year. Of these, 8.2 million copies were from Sony’s own studios, reflecting a rise of 1.9 million units. These figures highlight a growing appetite for Sony’s exclusive content.
Outlook for PS5 Sales in Q3
The demand for PS5 is expected to pick up in the third quarter, traditionally the strongest sales period for consoles. In Q3 of fiscal 2025, Sony sold 7.9 million PS5s. Surpassing 100 million units sold would place the PS5 as the fourth PlayStation console to reach this milestone, following the PS1, PS2, and PS4. Currently, Sony is just over 2 million units away from hitting this landmark.
Additionally, the upcoming release of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI could significantly boost PS5 sales, raising expectations for Sony’s future performance.
Despite the dip in console sales, Sony’s positive momentum in game sales suggests a resilient business model.
The increase in game purchases, especially those produced by Sony’s internal studios, is a crucial factor for the company’s growth amid slowing hardware demand. With the fiscal year’s end approaching and major releases like Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon, Sony’s market position and financial results may see substantial improvement.
As Sony navigates the evolving gaming landscape, it is also making significant changes to its hardware offerings. The company's recent decision to phase out 4K Blu-ray players in Japan signals a shift towards a fully digital future for PS5 games by 2028. This transition could further influence consumer preferences and sales dynamics in the upcoming quarters, making it an important development for gamers and industry watchers alike.
