SpaceX Launches Massive Terafab Chip Factory in Texas with Up to $119 Billion Investment
SpaceX Initiates Construction of Terafab Semiconductor Plant
According to НВ — Техно: SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, is embarking on building the Terafab chip manufacturing facility in Grimes County, Texas. Covering an enormous area of 9.3 million square meters, this plant will rank among the world’s largest production sites. The factory’s primary mission is to give SpaceX full control over the creation of advanced computing hardware used in Tesla vehicles, Optimus robots, and other company products.
Investment Scale and Strategic Partnerships
The investment for this project is projected to range between $55 billion and $119 billion, highlighting its monumental scale. Earlier this year in April, Reuters reported the start of construction for a research center at the Gigafactory in Austin, which forms part of SpaceX’s broader expansion plans. Key collaborators include tech giants Intel and TSMC. In April, Intel announced a partnership with SpaceX to advance silicon chip manufacturing technologies, while on October 3rd, Elon Musk confirmed ongoing talks with Taiwanese firm TSMC to participate in the project.
Terafab will be supplied with water from the Gibbons Creek reservoir, and its power needs will be met through gas-powered generators. Musk explained the choice of Grimes County was influenced by the existing production of Starlink satellite antennas within Texas:
“Grimes County is a convenient location because Starlink satellite antennas are already manufactured in the state,” said Elon Musk.
Additionally, the facility’s proximity to the Starbase launch site in Brownsville enhances its strategic importance.
Constructing the Terafab plant marks a critical move for SpaceX toward establishing a self-reliant manufacturing pipeline, significantly reducing dependency on external chip suppliers. This initiative underscores the company's commitment to pushing technological innovation, which could greatly strengthen the competitiveness of its electric vehicles and automation products. The success of this endeavor may reshape the industrial landscape in Texas and solidify SpaceX's standing as a frontrunner in the high-tech sector.
