SBU Officer Charged with Accepting $68,000 Bribe for Fake Military Service Deferral
Bribery Charges Filed
According to Главком: An officer from the Security Service of Ukraine's (SBU) Main Directorate for Kyiv and the Kyiv region has been formally charged with accepting a bribe of $68,000. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) have confirmed the details. The bribe was paid by two individuals, each contributing $34,000.
Case Details
The money was paid to resolve issues related to removing the individuals from a wanted list at a Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center (TRC) and to subsequently arrange a fraudulent deferral from military mobilization. According to investigators, the suspect received the funds in exchange for ensuring the citizens would not face legal consequences after obtaining a fake deferral. The planned deferral was to be based on knowingly false documents, which falsely stated that each man had three dependent children. The scheme involved counterfeit birth certificates intended to be issued abroad.
On February 23, NABU and SAPO exposed and detained the SBU officer from the Main Directorate for Kyiv and the region. Law enforcement states the suspect is also charged with involvement in the legalization of criminally obtained property. According to NABU's statement, 'the money came from two citizens ($34,000 from each) for resolving the issue of their removal from the wanted list at the TRC and the subsequent processing of a mobilization deferral, as well as for ensuring they would not be held accountable after the fake deferral was arranged.'
This case highlights the persistent issue of corruption within state institutions, particularly in law enforcement agencies in Ukraine. The exposure and detention of an SBU officer could mark a significant step in the fight against corruption, but it also underscores the need for continued reforms to ensure transparency and accountability in government bodies. Investigating such cases helps identify systemic flaws and prevent similar crimes in the future. This incident occurs against the backdrop of Ukraine's ongoing efforts to reform its institutions while under martial law.
