USA's Action Plan for Venezuela

According to Главком: The USA has announced a three-step action plan for Venezuela following the capture of Nicolas Maduro by American troops. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported on this plan, emphasizing the importance of the Venezuelan people determining the country's future. The operation that took place on January 3 resulted in the arrest of Maduro, who, along with his wife Cilia Flores, was brought to court in New York on January 5.

Maduro is charged with multiple serious criminal offenses related to drug trafficking and terrorism. The accusations against him were first made in absentia in March 2020. Following the arrest of Nicolas Maduro, Delcy Rodriguez was appointed as the interim president of Venezuela. The oath-taking ceremony for Rodriguez was held under the chairmanship of Parliament Speaker Jorge Rodriguez.

Three-Step Action Plan

The three-step action plan for Venezuela includes:

  • Stabilization of the country;
  • Restoration;
  • Transition period.

Marco Rubio noted that the USA has significant leverage over the interim authorities, yet emphasized that ultimately it is the Venezuelan people who must determine their future. Meanwhile, Senator Chris Murphy characterized the plan as

'oil theft at gunpoint'

, highlighting possible ethical issues related to the US's actual intentions in the region.

This situation indicates potential changes in the political landscape of Venezuela, which may have far-reaching consequences not only for the country but also for the region as a whole. The response of the international community to the actions of the USA and the further developments in Venezuela remain in question, as the country has been suffering from political and economic instability for a long time. Questions regarding the legitimacy of the new authorities and the possible consequences for the population amid changes in state leadership are also significant.
