Clarifying Survivor's Pension Payments During Summer Vacation

According to Пенсії (RSS): A 19-year-old university student has raised a pressing question: will her survivor's pension continue through the summer holidays? Under current law, pension payments for loss of a breadwinner remain active throughout the entire academic year-including vacation periods-as long as the recipient maintains full-time student status. In this specific case, the young woman has just completed her first year at university and receives a pension following the death of her father.

Legal Framework for Pension Disbursement

Article 36 of Ukraine's Law on Mandatory State Pension Insurance stipulates that children enrolled full-time in higher education institutions are entitled to a pension until they finish their studies, but no later than age 23. Orphaned children may receive this pension up to age 23 regardless of their enrollment status. It is important to note that the academic year spans 12 months, starting on September 1st.

Pension payments continue throughout the entire academic year, including holiday breaks, provided the student's status remains unchanged. The Pension Fund of Ukraine obtains enrollment data from the Unified State Electronic Database on Education. Therefore, the student can rest assured that her benefits will persist through the summer break as long as she stays enrolled as a full-time student.

This scenario underscores how adherence to legal provisions ensures consistent social support for young people during their studies.

For full-time students, uninterrupted financial assistance across the academic year-including holidays-represents a key pillar of social policy. It allows them to focus on their education without added financial strain.

As the government continues to enhance social support mechanisms for various demographics, it's worth noting that starting in 2026, mothers with large families will benefit from increased pension supplements. This initiative highlights the ongoing efforts to strengthen financial assistance for families and individuals in need, ensuring that support systems adapt to changing societal demands.
