Belgium and Ukraine's Health Ministry to Develop Maxillofacial Surgery Expertise at Superhumans Center
Ukraine's Health Ministry and Superhumans Center Forge Partnership
According to Міністерство Здоров'я: A new collaborative project involving Ukraine's Ministry of Health, the Superhumans Center for war trauma, and the Belgian development agency Enabel has been launched. The initiative, set to run until 2028, aims to establish a national network of expertise in maxillofacial surgery, create training hubs, and implement a comprehensive case management system. This partnership addresses a critical need for advanced reconstructive surgery resulting from wartime injuries.
Belgium will provide financial backing for the project, with the Superhumans Center designated as one of Ukraine's leading centers for maxillofacial surgery. Key components of the project's implementation include:
- establishing expertise centers in Lviv and Kyiv;
- launching training and simulation hubs for medical professionals;
- developing clear patient referral pathways;
- creating a case management system;
- working to secure sustainable state funding for complex reconstructive procedures.
Several partners are involved in executing this project, including:
- Ukraine's Ministry of Health;
- Enabel (the Belgian development agency);
- Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University;
- O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University;
- Kyiv Regional Clinical Hospital;
- the non-governmental organization 'Doctors for Heroes'.
This initiative is designed to elevate the standard of medical services in maxillofacial surgery and ensure Ukrainian patients have access to high-quality treatment.
The Significance of an Expertise Network
Creating a national network for maxillofacial surgery expertise represents a vital step in improving medical care in Ukraine, particularly during wartime when many patients require specialized treatment. Collaboration with international partners like Enabel will provide the necessary resources and knowledge to advance this medical field within the country. Such specialized trauma care has become increasingly essential since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.
This project could also serve as a model for other medical initiatives seeking to improve access to quality treatment nationwide.
