Ukraine Gains Support at the GLOBSEC Forum

According to Главком: Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonson voiced his country’s backing for Ukraine’s membership in both NATO and the European Union during the GLOBSEC forum held in Prague. He emphasized that every European nation meeting the established criteria has the right to join NATO.

“No country should hold a veto over this process. That is our stance,” Jonson stated.

Three Reasons for Ukraine's NATO Membership

To bolster his case, the minister presented three main arguments in favor of Ukraine joining the alliance:

• The size of its military, specifically its 110 brigades.
• A unique innovation system that has been tested and refined in actual combat conditions.
• Ukraine’s defense industry, which underwent significant transformation after Russia’s full-scale invasion. Kyiv implemented deregulation, privatization, and opened competition in the arms market, boosting its defensive capabilities.

However, despite Sweden’s supportive position, Jonson acknowledged that no consensus exists among allies regarding Ukraine’s NATO membership.

“I understand some allies are opposed. But if you ask about our position, this is it,” he added.

The minister also noted that he held talks with Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov in Stockholm concerning the supply of Swedish Gripen fighter jets. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte commented on the situation as well, highlighting the need to stabilize the front line.

In summary, Jonson’s remarks at the GLOBSEC forum underscored Sweden’s support for Ukraine while pointing to ongoing divisions among allies on this matter.

Notably, Kurt Volker has indicated that Ukraine may not receive a formal NATO invitation, advocating instead for a 'coalition of the willing' to ensure security.
